Discovering Gibraltar together

Published: 29/11/2018. Categories: Sin categoría.

In this post we are not going to talk about Gibraltar Brexit we are going to discovering Gibraltar together.

In the year 710, a predominately Berber army under the command of Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from North Africa and landed somewhere in the vicinity of Gibraltar. His conquest left a long-lasting legacy for Gibraltar: The rock was named Jebel Tariq, the Mount of Tariq, subsequently corrupted into Gibraltar. The Moorish castle that we can find on the top of the rock would have been much larger than the area that can be seen today because of damage over the centuries since it was built.

In the early stages of the war, the British were worried that Germany would attack this strategic territory and the plan was to accommodate tens of thousands of troops in the tunnels in preparation

After the second world war, Franco renewed Spain’s claim to sovereignty over Gibraltar and restricted movement between the two countries. Gibraltarians voted overwhelmingly to remain under British sovereignty in the referendum in 1967.

Gibraltar Weather

Gibraltar has is own microclimate because of its location, but also because of the presence of the Rock. Sometimes the wind creates a peculiar cloud on the Rock of Gibraltar, which insists especially in the central part of the city, and can also partially come down towards the plain, generating some fogs. The best time to visit Gibraltar, for walking and hiking, is late spring, from mid-April to mid-June, however, since in the summer it’s usually not too hot, you can also choose this season to discover the rock.

Gibraltar Airport

The airport was constructed during World War II when Gibraltar was an

important naval base for the British. Originally opened in 1939, it was only an emergency airfield for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. On 3 November 2003, Monarch Airlines announced a new route from Gibraltar to Manchester Airport. It was the first route from Gibraltar to operate to the North of England.

Gibraltar Cable Car

The Cable Car’s Station, it is located 412 m above sea level, the views are truly spectacular and it will take you only 6 minutes to get to the top. The Cable Car is open 7 days a week from 09:30 to 19:15. Except between 1st November & 31st March 09:30-17:15. Cable Car runs aprox every 10 to 15 mins throughout the day.

Gibraltar Monkeys

Perhaps the most important tourist attraction of the rock are the Barbary Macaques, they are normally found in North Africa, but their presence probably dates from the early days of the British garrison when it is presumed that they were imported, inevitably finding the rough limestone cliffs and scrub vegetation a congenial habitat.

Tips when viewing the macaques

  • Do not touch

  • Do not feed

  • Be vigiliant with your bags

  • Recognise their warning signals, when macaques feel thretened they will give a warning gesture.

  • Do no get to close to them

  • Avoid Staircases and thight spots, if the monkeys get defensive you will be putting yourself at risk unnecesarily.

See Dolphin on boat trips

A dolphin-watching trip is the most enjoyable way of seeing these fascinating animals. The dolphins in the bay and strait area can be seen nearly any day, primarily the Common Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin and the Striped Dolphin.
