Visiting Balcón de Europa in Nerja

You must stop by the most famous site in Nerja, the spectacular Balcony of Europe (Balcón de Europa). King Alfonso XII named Balcón de Europa after an earthquake destroyed the town in 1884, the king went to Nerja to see the disasters provoked.

As soon as he watched out of the rocky promontory where a 9th-century Moorish fort was situated, he exclaimed: “This is the Balcony of Europe”. In fact, from this point, you can enjoy some of the most spectacular views over the surrounding area of Nerja.

The promenade and the area that surround the Balcón de Europa are completely pedestrian and are provided with plenty of bars and restaurants that become lively at night.

Nerja Caves

The highlight of Nerja are their famous caves. Situated 3 km north of town, this 5-million-year-old cave was home to Stone Age hunters, and nowadays presents the tallest stalactites and stalagmites formations in the world.The most impressive is the 32-meter-high central column in the “Cataclysm Hall”, which has been holding the Guinness World Record since 1989.

In July, they celebrated inside the caves The Festival Cueva de Nerja takes place in the Waterfall Hall. Spanish and international ballet and music stars perform in a magic surrounding, making it one of the most spectacular events in the world.

Nerja Beaches

Only a few kilometers from the centre of Nerja is Maro Beach (Playa de Maro). This beach is considerated as one of the best beaches in Spain thanks to their crystal clear waters, easy acces and beautiful scenarios.

It never ceases to amaze how many fish you’ll see, combined with exceptionally clear waters, makes it one of the best locations in Andalucia for snorkelling and diving.

Snorkelling off Maro Beach can be enjoyed by the whole family, with most of the best spots within easy swimming distance from the beach. Just put a mask on and put your head underwater, you are almost guaranteed to see some life under water.

Visit Frigiliana

The village of Frigiliana is situated six-kilometres north of Nerja.  The village can be divided into two. The newer section and the older section Morisco-Mudéjar neighbourhood. 

Wandering the streets in the uper section is a joy. You feel as if you are taken back to a land of Moorish Kingdoms and the Reconquista, ta place that feels remarkably like one of the villages in the neighbouring Riff mountains of Morocco. The whole feel and atmosphere of Frigiliana is remarkable.

Situated at three hundred metres above sea level, the views from Frigiliana are spectacular. On a clear winter’s day, the North African coastline is often visible and the views of Nerja and the surrounding countryside don’t come much better than those on offer from Frigiliana.
